The trials, tribulations, and achievements (!), of a political seamstress

December 2007

Cloak for youngest son.

This is a 3/4 circle cloak, made from a 4.5m of grey wool/acrylic mix with a red acetate lining. The clasp was chosen by my son and had to be ordered from America! The lining has internal pockets.

The collar proved problematic as I didn’t have enough fabric to make the full ‘Dracula’ type collar he wanted, however a quick change of design turned it into a medieval ‘regal’ cloak instead. He is very pleased with it :D

Pictures to follow.

October 2007

Skirt for friend’s wedding.

Fabric: 4yds of sari silk bought from India, 2.5m of ivory acetate antistatic dress lining.

Wrap around style with hand sewn hems on bottom and side ends. Pleated into a waist band using the sari border. More here.

August 2007

Semi-circle Cloak.

I started out making this cloak for myself, but my eldest son took one look at it and asked if he could have it instead!

The outer layer is made of 100% wool, fairly heavy upholstery fabric. The lining is linen with 2% lycra (which I bought as I was told it was 100% linen, it was too cheap to send back), originally blue I had dyed it black; it turned out brown!

Both the outer and inner are cut as a complete 57″ radius semi-circle. Tailored at the shoulders, and then sewn together at the front. A stand up collar, as requested by my son, was sewn in, as were several pockets in the lining. The cloak was finished with the hems sewn separately, a brass clasp at the throat and hook and eye fastenings down the front.
